San Cristoforo "Baci di Sangiovese" 2019, Tuscany, Italy
Millton "La Cote" Pinot Noir 2018, Gisborne, New Zealand
Meinklang Blaufrankisch 2019, Burgenland, Austria
An excellent study in biodynamic winemaking from three renowned producers. Three different grapes, three different countries, three winemakers, all practicing biodynamic farming to produce wines of exceptional quality.
San Cristoforo produces biodynamic wine in Maremma, Tuscany, under the leadership of Lorenzo Zonin, who many consider to be making the most fascinating wines in Maremma. Baci di Sangiovese is 100% Sangiovese grapes fermented in stainless and aged in neutral oak for 6 months before bottling. A poweful bouquet of violets, cherries and wild berries, with spice and liquorice. Pleasantly fresh with good structure supported by velvety tannins and a long finish.
James Millton is considered New Zealand's biodynamic guru and was the first winegrower in the southern hemisphere to gain biodynamic certification. His vineyard sites are located in the Gisborne region, where proximity to the Pacific Ocean and cooling sea breezes keep the climate temperate and friendly allowing for excellent balance of acidity and fruit. Time in decanter will allow this wine to shine with brambly fruit, spice, dried floral notes, mushroom and earthiness. This wine is both delicate and powerful with lazer sharp crunchy red fruit and chalky tannins. Just enough complex funkiness.
Meinklang is a family run mixed farm set in the World Hertiage Site of the National Park Neusiedlersee, Austria. A herd of local cows contribute to the farm by way of their natural and invaluable fertilizer, and crop diversity (grains, wheat, fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, wild herbs and flowers) only enriches the quality of grapes produced. Blaufrankisch is a food friendly Austrian red grape related to both Gamay and Zweigelt. It is sometimes referred to as the "Pinot Noir of the East". High in acid and rich in tannin, this grape usually shows notes of dark fruit and pepper. Meinklang's biodnymaic Blaufrankisch shows notes of bramble and milk chocolate on the nose, followed by a fresh cherry palate. Easy and juicy, medium bodied with ample freshness.
