Laurent Miquel "Vendanges Nocturnes" Classic Rouge 2018, Pays d'Oc, France... $20
A familiar Le Petit Bar red wine. Considered our "house red", this wine is a blend of Merlot, Grenache and Syrah. It shows ripe and juicy berry fruit with a dry earthiness. Very smooth on the palate the tannins are firm but not astringent. This dry wine offers enough acidity to be refreshing while still presenting rich fruit notes. Easy drinking and a pleasant match for many meats and cheeses.
Therianthropy "David Eagle Gamay" 2018, Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara, Ontario... $38
Gamay grapes from Niagara's famous Foxcroft Wismer Vineyard, wild fermented and unfiltered. This is the first release from Therianthropy. Winemaker David Eiberg and partners focus on low-intervention wines made from the best fruit Ontario has to offer. It is my pleasure to be able to offer this wine to you, Peterborough. I can nearly always find pleasure in Gamay Noir. Plush berry fruit, a dried floral note, earthiness, warm spice, long and smooth.
Eric Texier Brezeme 2017, Cotes du Rhone, France... $48
Where the wine nerds at!? Eric Texier, friends. The Rhone's champion of nearly forgotten AOCs and natural wine making. I am certain no one else is selling you this wine in the Peterborough area. Listing this wine makes me very happy. It is the most expensive on this list, yes, but it would have been prohibitively expensive to list by-the-glass in the wine bar. A silver lining of all this is that we can offer a temporarily reduced markup because of the circumstances, and therefore have the ability to list wine like this one. Texier believes most of the work happens in the vineyard - careful farming in harmony with nature. With great fruit one can make great wine with minimal intervention; whole cluster pressing, wild fermentation, little to no use of sulphur dioxide, unfiltered, neutral maturation. This wine is 100% Syrah from 30+ year old vines from Brezeme, a nearly forgotten region in the Rhone Valley. Organically farmed and hand harvested grapes. Juicy but complex. Black fruit, black olive, smoke, meat. Acidity, minerality. A refreshing Syrah, elegant. Not a big oak bomb; the opposite of that.
Fidora Veneto Rosso, Domini del Leone, Veneto, Italy... $25
Organic farming. A fantastic value red from Italy. From the home of Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone comes this non-vintage, or multi-vintage, blend of Corvina, Merlot, Cabernet and Raboso. Red fruit and vanilla. Great quality organic wine for enjoying now.
Al-muvedre 2018, Alicante, Spain... $23
The Monastrell, or Mourvedre, grape from star Spanish producer Telmo Rodriguez. Raised in the Mediterranean this wine is rich with ripe fruit character and deep brooding colour. Black fruit and ripe red cherry, herbal eucalyptus notes, sweet notes from touches of oak. This wine is dry, bold and full bodied. Grippy tannins make it a good choice for barbeque. Five bottles left.
PINK / SKIN CONTACT
Laurent Miquel "Vendanges Noctunres" Classic Rose 2018, Pays d'Oc, France... $20
Dry, fresh, crisp and delicate rose. Elegantly pale pink. Fresh raspberry and citrus. Fruity and clean. Grenache and Syrah rose. Perfect for spring weather and your backyard.
Orsogna Lunaria "Ramoro" Pinot Grigio 2019, Terre di Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy... $31
Skin contact, wild yeast, biodynamics... some of our favourite things. Beautiful copper colour from Pinot Grigio's naturally rosy-pigmented skins, intense floral and stone fruit nose, citrus, and a little texture. Dry and pretty and ethereal. Five bottles left
Laurent Miquel "Vendanges Nocturnes" Classic Blanc 2018, Pays d'Oc, France... $20
A familiar Le Petit Bar white wine. Considered our "house white", this wine is a beguiling white blend. It is dry and citrusy, boasting notes of white peach and loads of lemon and grapefruit. I often describe this wine as a cross between Sauvignon Blanc and un-oaked Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio. It is chuggable, especially at this price!
Stanners Vineyard Chardonnay 2016, Prince Edward County... $34
Where's the local love at!? From one of the best local producers, in my opinion, comes this 2016 Chardonnay. The Stanners family is meticulous in their wine making. Their wines offer a unique combination of precise wine-making and appreciation for terroir through respectful, low intervention processes. The 2016 vintage is no longer available for sale via Stanners themselves, so here's a special treat for Le Petit Bar customers and wine lovers. Dry and judiciously oaked, notes of lemon, ripe apple, a touch of sweet spice with fresh acidity and a mineral crispness. Fresh, fruity, medium bodied. Great for a variety of foods or just for drinking and contemplation
Lionel Gosseaume "Les Sauterelles" 2018, Touraine, France... $28
Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. Pink grapefruit and ripe peach notes. Stony, mineral laced acidity, lengthy and pretty. A lovely example of Touraine Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect for the imminent nice weather. Lovely with a salad of fresh spring produce.
Podere San Cristoforo "Luminoso" Vermentino, Maremma Toscana, Italy... $37
Podere San Cristoforo's vineyards are blessed with marine breezes and stony soils - ideal conditions for the vine. Grapes are farmed using biodynamics alongside olives, cereal crops and sunflowers. This biodiversity creates a nurturing environment to grow grapes. The grapes in this Vermentino based wine come from Podere San Cristoforo's oldest vineyard plot. Intensely aromatic with stone fruit and white flowers. Lemon curd, savoury herbs and minerals on the palate. An impressive wine.
Nua Brut, Prosecco-style bubbles, Italy... $22
Our house sparkling wine, what we use in our sparkling cocktails, the Saint-Germain cocktails and what we sell on the regular by the glass. A fantastic fruity and dry Prosecco-style bubbly - we can't call it Prosecco, exactly, because of protected designation of origin laws, but this wine is made from the Prosecco grape and drinks like a high-class Prosecco ;)
Le Fay d'Homme Vincent Caille "X Bulles", Loire, France... $35
From Muscadet comes this beautiful biodynamic Ancestral Method sparkling wine. Made from 90% Chardonnay and 10% Grolleau - a lesser known French red grape native to the Loire Valley. This small touch of Grolleau contributes to the kiss of copper colour you'll find in this wine and boosts it's refreshing acidity. The Ancestral Method is likely the original method for making sparkling wine. A happy accident of yeast falling asleep partially through fermentation, most likely due to a drop in temperature, wine (with live but sleeping yeast) being bottled, and yeast awakening to the surprise of the wine maker. Once awake this yeast continued it's fermentation work creating an unanticipated fizzy bottle of wine! Today the yeast's behaviour is more controlled, with the partially fermented wine being chilled in order to bottle before fermentation is completed. X Bulles is an expressive bottling, with notes of tart fruit, berries and some floral notes. The perfect sparkling wine for backyard hangs.
LAST CHANCE BOTTLES
Dominio de Punctum "Lagasca" Viognier 2018, La Mancha, Spain... $25
White. Made from organic grapes with Biodynamic practices, this special wine is aromatic and dry. Floral and citrusy, medium-plus bodied with a slight creaminess on the palate. This is a very pretty and pleasant wine. Only three bottles left.
Vom Berg "Brand" Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2017, Pfalz, Germany... $33
White. Organic farming. Mineral zing, acid, peach, citrus. Riesling is my second favourite white grape and this is a fine example of a barely off-dry Riesling. The bottle is super beautiful too. Only one bottle left.
Mure "Originel" Sylvaner 2017, Alsace... $29
White. The Slyvaner grape was once the dominant variety planted in Alsace. Now it accounts for just more than a tenth of plantings. I've been waiting for the right time to list this wine. Unfamiliar grapes need space to shine on a wine list. The Mure vineyards have been family run for generations and farmed with biodynamic practices. This wine is beautifully perfumed with light floral notes, citrus and orchard fruit. Lively mineral acidity and a dry, fresh, clean finish. Only four bottles left
Vega Real "Roble" 2018, Ribera del Duero, Spain... $29
Red. 100% Tempranillo. Smooth red. Intense fruit, spice, toasted wood. Rich, dry and full bodied. Only four bottles left
